AUGUSTA, GA – The title defense for the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in the books, while the Lobos laying claim to 6th place at 2-under 862 (285-287-290).
UNM was lead by Andre Garcia (72-70-68-210), who shot a bogey free 4-under 68 in Sunday’s final round to finish at 6-under for the tournament and T8. This was Garcia’s highest finish on the year.
When asked about Garcias finish, especially his Sunday performance, head coach Glen Millican’s thoughts were, “he played really well. A bogey-free final round is awesome and this was a good finish for him.”
Gustavo Morantes continued to display consistency finishing at 1-over 217 (71-72-74) and in T27 position. Morantes recovered nicely from a double-bogey on the par-4 8th hole, firing back with an immediate birdie. However, a bogey on the 205 yard par-3 16th caused him to give back some ground to the field.
Samuel Kim had a fairly quite day, tallying a lone birdie accompanied by three bogeys on the day. Eventually Kim would finish T35 at 3-over 219 (69-76-74).
Andrej Bevins (73-72-77) and Sean Carlon (75-73-74) both finished at 6-over 222 and in ties for 45th overall. Bevins had a difficult opening nine, but recovered with three birdies on the back nine to make up a respectable round. Carlon was able to punch in four birdies on the day.
The Lobos had another solid statistical outing, taking advantage of the par-5’s to the tune of 25-under on the week. UNM carried the fourth lowest par-5 scoring average as a team, in addition to tallying 50 total birdies and a pair of eagles.
“Good week for our team as well. We hung in there well both days and had a solid finish over here” concluded Millican.
Some noteworthy individual statistics include Sean Carlon playing the par-3’s at even-par, the fourth lowest cumulative mark on the week. Andre Garcia played the week’s par-5’s in 8-under fashion, carrying an average of 4.33.
No.4 Illinois earned this year’s team title after shooting 12-under today to pull away from No. 2 Texas (276-285-279-840), eventually finishing at 27-under 837 (271-290-276).
Once again Beau Hossler laid claim to individual medalist honors, finishing the week at 11-under 205 (68-68-69), two shots clear of the University of Tennessee’s Chad Merzbacher.
Next up for the Lobos is the Perry Maxwell Invitational co-hosted by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State April 16-17.
