TUCSON, AZ –
Day 1 of the 2016 MW Golf Championships is in the books, with the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sitting tied for second with rival San Diego State at 8-under 280.

Head Coach Glen Millican was satisfied with the entirety of the team’s performance, especially the efforts of Andrej Bevins and Samuel Kim.

“It was a solid day by all five guys. We played well enough to be in a good spot after one day” said Millican.

All five Lobo competitors are inside the top-25, while the squad is lead by Andrej Bevins in fifth place at 4-under 68. Bevins got off to a quick start, posting birdies on three of his first five holes on his way to posting six total birdies on the day.

Samuel Kim follows close behind at 3-under, good for T6. Consistency was the name of the game for Kim. He executed the game plan well, with only a single bogey on the day.

Andre Garcia was also able to contribute to the fast opening stretch for UNM. He eventually finished the day at 1-under 71 and T14.

Freshman Sean Carlon posted birdies on his first two holes and had the Lobos trending up the leaderboard through the opening sequence. Eventually Carlon would finish the day at even-par and T23 with teammate Gustavo Morantes. Morantes, who also got off to a nice start, was hindered by mistakes on his homeward nine on his was to posting a solid 72.

On the statistical side, UNM was able to control their loses on the par-3’s, playing the holes at a mere 2-over par on the day. This coupled with the clean slate on par-4’s and the usual impressive par-5 scoring (10-under). The Lobos were also second in the field with respect to total birdies.

The Championship is lead, somewhat surprisingly, by Fresno State. The Bulldogs opening day was bolstered by three of their five competitors landing inside the top-10 at day’s end. Trevor Clayton lead the team after posting a 6-under 66.

22nd ranked SDSU is tied with the Lobos, lead by a pair 69’s from Nahum Mendoza III and PJ Samiere. Colorado State (7-under 281) and Nevada (6-under 282) round out the top-5.

Play is set to begin tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. MT.
