AUGUSTA, GA –
After the first 36 holes of competition the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is T6 at 4-under 572 (285-287).

UNM head coach Glen Millican was satisfied with his team’s performance on the day saying, “our guys played solid all day.”

The Lobos were lead by Andre Garcia who finished the day at 2-under 142 (72-70), and in a tie for 16th position. Garcia tallied ten birdies on the day and played holes 10-18 in two under fashion.

Despite having an eagle on the par-5 6th, Gustavo Morantes was unable to gain anymore ground on the day. At day’s end Morantes stood just outside the top-20 at 1-under 143 (71-72).

Andrej Bevins (73-72) and Samuel Kim (69-76) both finished the day at 1-over 145 and T33. Bevins was able to secure an eagle on the 607 yard par-5 11th to go along with a streak of three consecutive birdies on holes 16-18, while Kim got off to a hot start, with four birdies on holes 10-18. However the tough afternoon weather conditions caused Kim to give back some ground to the field.

Sean Carlon was unable to gain the necessary momentum despite shaving strokes in the afternoon round (75-73-148) and eventually finished the day at 4-over and T48.

“Great composure allowed us to finish well and maintain a nice position heading into Sunday” continued Millican.

UNM had 35 total birdies on the day, accompanied by a pair of eagles. Par-5 scoring was once again the Lobos most statistically noteworthy area. On the day the team carried a scoring average of 4.50 and played the holes in 20-under fashion.

Andre Garcia played the par-5’s in 7-under, leading UNM with a scoring average of 4.13, tied for second lowest in the field. Gustavo Morantes also contributed to the squad’s strong opening day performance; he was tied for the third lowest scoring average on par-3’s for the day.

Play is scheduled to resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. weather permitting.
