SAN ANTONIO – The University of New Mexico men’s golf team are the champions of the 2016 Lone Star Invitational, winning by six strokes.
The six-shot victory is the second largest margin of victory in tournament history. The Lobos have now laid claim to the team title of the Lone Star Invitational for the third time in the tournament’s seven year history. In addition, UNM is also the only team to repeat as champions.
After a blistering opening day the Lobos battled through some early struggles to claim the tournament title at 13-over 877 (293-286-298). The winds picked up today causing havoc throughout the field, and forced UNM’s squad to remain patient and collected until days end.
Gustavo Morantes led the Lobos with a fourth-place performance, posting a 2-over 218 (77-66-75), in a tie with Cory Churchman of North Texas. Morantes’ performance on this week’s par-5’s was where he picked up the most ground on the tournament field. Morantes played the holes at 11-under for the tournament, on his way to leading the field in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.08.
Andrej Bevins earned another top-10 performance towards this year’s campaign, he finished in a tie for sixth at 3-over 219 (71-75-73). Bevins tallied four birdies in his final round and avoided any score worse than bogey.
Freshman Sean Carlon pieced together three competitive rounds (76-73-73), and finished in a tie for thirteenth. This performance was the best of his young collegiate career.
Fellow freshman Samuel Kim struggled in his final round, yet was still able to finish safely inside the top-20. His performance of 7-over 223 (73-72-78) was good for a tie for 16th. Par-5 scoring was Kim’s strength for the week; he played the holes at 10-under. Kim carried a scoring average of 4.17, trailing only Gustavo Morantes in scoring average on par-5’s for the week.
Perhaps the most noteworthy statistical aspect of this week’s was New Mexico’s performance on par-5’s, which the team played in 31-under fashion. UNM lead the field in total eagles with eight, and had two players in Samuel Kim and Gustavo Morantes that tallied three eagles.
The Lobos now look to carry forward this week’s momentum into the 3M Championship in Augusta, where they were crowned champions of last year’s event. The 3M Augusta Invitational is set to begin on April 2 and conclude the following day.
