SAN ANTONIO – After today’s action in the Lone Star Invitational, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in sole possession of the tournament lead at 3-over 579 (293-286).
The Lobos were lead by a great comeback round from Gustavo Morantes, who shot up to a tie for second at day’s end. After posting a 5-over 77 which included a triple bogey on the opening round, Morantes fired back to shoot a 6-under 66 on the day’s second 18. Morantes’ 66 was the lowest round on the day and two strokes off the all-time tournament record of 8-under 64.
Samuel Kim also put in a top-notch performance; he stands in a tie for fourth at 1-over 145 (73-72). Kim was hindered by a few missteps, however he was able to recover nicely posting two eagles on the day.
Andrej Bevins also was able to manage an under par second round after some initial struggles on his opening 18. Bevins was able to post an eagle in the closing stretch to post a 1-under 71. Currently Bevins sits in a tie for sixth a 2-over 146.
Rounding out UNM competitors were Sean Carlon who posted a 5-over 149 (73-76). Carlon is currently sitting in a tie for seventeenth. Andre Garcia currently sits in a tie for fortieth after finishing the day at 10-over 154 (73-81).
UNM collectively lead the field in combined par-4 and par-5 scoring, carrying averages of 4.20 and 4.88 respectively. The Lobos were able to distance themselves from the competition thanks to shooting a collective 21-under on the par-5’s. The day included a whopping seven eagles, lead by Gustavo Morantes who played the day’s par-5’s at 9-under.
Three Texas teams are inside the top-5 in North Texas (2nd), UTSA (4th) and UTEP (5th). The tournament is lead by Ohio State’s Tee-k Kelly at 4-under 140 (68-72).
Tomorrow’s action is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. with shotgun starts for all teams and players.
