TUCSON, Ariz. – After today’s action the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in possession of third place alone at 4-under 572, only Santa Clara (11-under 565) and Nevada (6-under 570) are ahead of UNM on the tournament leaderboard.
The Lobos were lead by Junior Andrej Bevins, who shot a 4-under 66 (72-66-138). This was the second lowest round on the day, trailing only the 64 posted by Notre Dame’s Ben Albin.
Bevins recovered quickly from a bogey on his opening hole and with consecutive birdies and later on in the round caught fire and posted birdies on holes 13-15.
Today’s 66 placed Bevins in a tie for 6th with Ben Albin, helping propel UNM three spots up the leaderboard and post the second lowest team round on the day.
Gustavo Morantes followed up yesterday’s 67 with a 2-under 70 today (67-70-137). The fireworks on Morantes’ round were not quite as abundant as yesterday’s round, however his 2-under performance today allowed him to hold on to fourth place.
UNM head coach Glen Millican saw the day as all together positive, “another very nice job by Andrej and Gustavo, the freshmen hung in there well to keep us in a good position heading into the final round” said Millican.
As stated by Millican UNM’s freshman continued to display consistency with Samuel Kim once again posted a 2-over 74 (74-74-148) and Sean Carlon posting a 3-over 75 (74-75-149), one shot over yesterday’s mark. Kim is currently in 40th position overall, while Carlon finds himself in 48th.
Andre Garcia’s struggles continued as he posted a 4-over 76 (75-75-151), Garcia finds himself in 59th overall.
The Lobos are leading all teams in par-4 scoring, while the team is also carrying a 4.68 scoring average on par-5’s and have tallied 34 birdies in the tournament so far, good for third most in the field.
Some other statistical highlights include Gustavo Morantes leading the field in par-4 scoring, with an average of 3.75. Morantes has also posted the third most birdies in the tournament so far with 11. Additionally Andrej Bevins follows close behind in total birdies, having posting 10 thus far.
The NIT continues to be lead by the Broncos of Santa Clara, however the scoring was tame in comparison to yesterday’s 10-under 278. The Nevada Wolf Pack are sitting in second at 6-under 570, after posting a 4-over 292 today causing them to fall out of a tie for first.
“Overall, we played well enough today to have a chance to compete tomorrow. If we can get four guys posting solid rounds we will have a chance” concluded Millican.
