2016 MW Championships Final Results
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team finished the 2016 Mountain West Championships in seventh place with 248 points. The Lobos finished just 10 points behind San Jose State for sixth while Nevada won the conference title by narrowly edging Boise State by 13 points.
The Lobos had several highlights on the final day, including freshman Mareike Foester winning the B final in the 200 yard breaststroke and reaching the NCAA’s B cut with a time of 2:15.76. Fellow freshman Adriana Palomino placed sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:48.11.
Junior Abigail Wheeler qualified for the A final in the 200 yard butterfly and swam a 2:02.85 in the final score 11 points for UNM. The UNM 400 free relay time of sophomore Morgan Ginnis, senior Shayla King, and freshmen Kanoha Shinada and Palomino placed seventh with a time of 3:23.48.
Earlier in the tournament, Ginnis also reached the necessary time for the NCAA B cut in the 50 free earlier in the championships, giving the Lobos two qualifying times.
Next up on the docket are the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships March 7-9 in Flagstaff, Ariz. The NCAA Championships take place March 17-19 in Atlanta.
