LIHUE, HAWAII – The 2016 installment of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate is in the books, with the University of New Mexico men’s golf team rallying on the final day to earn a 7th place finish.
The Lobos put together some final round heroics on their way to a 5-under team score of 283 today, good for the second lowest team score on the day overall.
UNM was lead today by a trio of 2-under 70’s from Gustavo Morantes (72-74-70-216), Samuel Kim (74-78-70), and Andrej Bevins (73-72-71-216).
Bevins and Morantes both secured top-20 finishes with their performances, in addition both Lobos posted tournament lows today. Sam Kim recovered nicely after yesterdays late round struggles, tallying five total birdies today.
Andre Garcia suffered a quadruple bogey on the par-4 2nd, nevertheless he was able to close his round with consecutive birdies, helping the team to secure its 7th place finish.
The Lobos missed out on a top-5 finish by a mere five total strokes. UNM gained most of their strokes on par-5’s, carrying a 4.52 stroke average and 29-under par for the tournament.
UNM tied for second in total tournament eagles, two coming from Morantes, which tied for the most by a single player. The Lobos were also able to tally 48 birdies this week, the fifth most of any team.
The highlight of the week comes at the hands of Gustavo Morantes who lead the field in par-5 scoring for the week at 12-under, and carrying an noteworthy 4.00 stroke average for the week.
This year’s tournament team champion was Texas at 20-under (276-284-284-844), who was lead by individual co-medalist Beau Hossler. Hossler finished the week a 6-under after posting two rounds in the 60’s (67-75-68-210).
California failed to defend the team title for the first time in four years, the Golden Bears eventually finished 2nd at 15-under (288-279-282-849).
UNM head coach Glen Millican was happy that his team was able to “salvaged a decent finish with today’s round, proud of the effort to fight back today.”
He continued slyly adding that it’s “always nice to move up in the final round.”
Next up for the Lobos is the National Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona Feb. 28 – Mar. 1 in Tucson.
