2016 Mountain West Championships Day Two

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A strong showing by the University of New Mexico swimming and diving team on day two of the Mountain West Championships vaulted the Lobos to seventh in the rankings at the finals. UNM finished fourth in the 200 yard freestyle relay to secure 30 points, freshman Adriana Palomino placed fifth in the 500 yard freestyle final to score 14 points, and Morgan Ginnis and Shayla King both swam very well in the 50 free to score for the Lobos.

Ginnis tied for third in the 50 with a time of 22.46 seconds, which was good enough for the NCAA B Cut. King, meanwhile, narrowly missed qualifying for the B Cut, falling just .02 seconds short with a time of 23.01, which was good for seventh place.

It was a busy day for Ginnis and King as they swam the first two legs, respectively, of the 200 free. They were joined by Madi Burns and Kaela McKee to post a time of 1:30.63 and finish solidly in fourth place.

The next finals event was the 500 free, and Palomino swam very well. She missed the B Cut time by .07 seconds with a final time of 4:47.86. Two Lobos also scored in the B Final of the 200 yard IM. Junior Emily McGill posted a time of 2:03.33 to claim three points for UNM, and freshman Mareike Foester added another point by swimming a 2:04.88 race.

UNM now has 99.5 points after two days of events. The Lobos are four and a half points up on Air Force, seven and a half on Colorado State and 29.5 on Fresno State. San Jose State is 26.5 points ahead of the Lobos in sixth place, however.

Day three begins with the 400-yard individual medley preliminaries at 10 a.m. MT. The finals competition starts at 5:30 p.m. MT with the 400-yard medley relay. The 2016 MW Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, February 20.
