LIHUE, HAWAII – After day two’s action in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in 11th place.
Andrej Bevins continued to display his consistency, coming into the clubhouse with an even par 72 (73-72-145). Bevins Currently sits in a tie for 25th and is the low Lobo in the tournament.
Gustavo Morantes followed up yesterday’s 72 with a 2-over 74 today. His round included an eagle on the par-5 13th hole and closed his front nine in 2-under (34) fashion. At day’s end Morantes finds himself in a tie for 30th overall.
Morantes is currently tied atop this week’s par-5 scoring average at 4.13 and 7-under for the tournament.
Andre Garcia improved greatly from yesterday’s 7-over performance, recovering nicely with a 2-over 74 today despite a few late missteps.
Freshman Sean Carlon opened his second round with a birdie on his way to a 3-over 75 today and 8-over on the week.
Sam Kim, unluckily faced the brunt of UNM’s back nine struggles on his way to a 6-over 78 on the day. Kim’s back nine included only three pars.
UNM trails only Texas in par-5 scoring thus far in the tournament. The Lobos are 20-under on par-5’s with a scoring average of 4.50, and are tied for second in total eagles after two rounds of completion.
It was a day of ups and downs for the Lobos, who displayed consistency throughout the majority of the team’s rounds today. However the closing stretch of this afternoon’s action was lackluster.
UNM head coach Glen Millican was brunt after todays round saying the team “had a good round going but collapsed at the end.”
Suffice to say that the Lobos are still in a good enough position to secure a top-10 but the team, and Millican understand that the team needs to improve.
“Simply put, we must do a better job of finishing tomorrow.”
