LIHUE, Hawaii – After the opening day the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in eighth place after shooting a team score of 6-over294.
The Lobos were lead by Gustavo Morantes who tallied five birdies on his way to an even par 72, landing him in a tie for 16th.
Morantes was followed closely by the efforts of Andrej Bevins who shot a 1-over 73 in a round that included a stretch of three birdies in four holes on his way to a 1-under 35 on the homeward nine. He eventually finished the day in a tie for 26th.
Samuel Kim and Sean Carlon closely followed suit, entering the clubhouse with scores of 74 and 75 respectively.
“We did a good job of finishing well today, our guys displayed nice patience and gave themselves a chance to take advantage of some scoring holes coming in.” UNM head coach Glen Millican said.
Eighth-ranked Texas currently leads the pack after posting a 12-under 276. Texas is lead by All-American Beau Hossler who shot a bogey free 67 today, landing him in atop the leaderboard. Teammate Scottie Scheffler who shot a 3-under 69 despite a few late bogeys.
Five-time defending champion California sits in second place 12 strokes behind Texas after a team score of 288 today. The Golden Bears were lead by Collin Morikawa who had only one bogey on his way to a 2-under 70.
Host Hawaii finds themselves in fifth place after shooting a 3-over 291 and were lead by James Moran-Hortan’s 3-under 69 which included a 4-under 32 on the back nine.
“It was good effort today and we are still in a good spot with two rounds to go,” Millican said.
