ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Both the men’s and the women’s ski programs led the way academically in the Fall of 2015, as the men’s team posted a 3.65 grade point average to lead all male sports, and the women’s team posted a 3.95 grade point average, which not only led all female sports teams, but it was the highest single-sport grade point average since records have been kept.

The women’s team, which consists of five women’s Nordic skiers and six alpine skiers, topped the previous department record of 3.90, which was posted by the women’s golf team in the Spring of 2013.  The previous high for women’s skiing was a 3.81 in the Fall of 2014.

For the men, the Lobos posted a 3.65 grade point average, marking the second straight semester that the men’s ski team has led all men’s sport programs in grade point average, and it is the eighth time in the last nine semesters that they have done so.

Last May, 13 skiers were honored by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association on the 2015 National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team, who is believed to be the hardest team of its kind to qualify for, as student-athletes must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and compete in the NCAA Regionals.  Last year Kyle Beling, Jessica Gnüchtel, Taylor Grauer, Sean Horner, Mark Miller, Anni Nord, Christian Otto, Sara Ottosson, Juho-Pekka Penttinen, Mats Resaland, Mateja Robnik, Eva Sever Rus and Sydney Staples all earned the honor as UNM finished fifth in the NCAA.
