After three days, 54 holes and 883 strokes, the 2015 Erin Hills Intercollegiate is officially in the books, and the University of New Mexico’s Men’s Golf team finished in seventh place after a round that didn’t carry the same air as the stellar performance yesterday.

“We got off to a rough start, but we did a good job of turning things around in the middle,” UNM head coach Glen Millican said. “We still need to get better in a few areas.”

The Lobos were lead by Andre Garcia who finished at 1-under 215 for the tournament (72-71-72), which tied for eighth place. He also ranked fifth in par-4 scoring for the week. Andrej Bevins finished with a T19 at 2-over 218 for the tournament and 1-over for the day (75-70-73).

The team was rounded out with solid contributions from all its members, as displayed by only a single Lobo failing to place inside the top 40 for the tournament. Gustavo Morantes finished T35 after shooting a 4-over 76 today and finished at 9-over 225 (77-72-76). Joseph Abella finished two strokes behind Morantes after shooting a 5-over 77 today (77-73-77-227). While Samuel Kim finished at 12-over 228 after struggling today, eventually finishing at 7-over for the day (75-74-79).

The team played a round that no longer entailed plentiful opportunities and provided a few more mistakes. Still they were able to rank in the top five in both par-5 and par-3 scoring. The scoring average for the entire tournament was 74.56 as Erin Hills bore its teeth and caused havoc for every team in some way.

The fourth-ranked team in the country Oklahoma State challenged wire-to-wire winner SMU today after shooting 7-under for the day and shrinking SMU’s comfortable four-shot lead starting the day to only two after the dust settled.

UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick was eventually crowned champion, finishing at 10-under 206. Austin Smotherman of SMU finished two strokes behind Garrick for lone second, while the rest of the top five was filled out by a trio of Oklahoma State players.

The Lobos head home to take a break Oct. 18, which marks the beginning of the Isleworth Invitational in Orlando, Florida.
