ALBUQUERQUE N.M. — After the second round of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate the University of New Mexico Lobos found themselves in sixth place after a day filled with birdies. The team as a whole lit up the field with 18 total with 11 coming at the hands of Andrej Bevins (6) and Andre Garcia (5).

Head Coach Glen Millican was satisfied with what he saw out on the course today.

“The team played a good, solid round by eliminating mistakes and giving themselves more opportunities,” he said.

Those opportunities translated to success as New Mexico has the second most total birdies in the field with 32, trailing only tournament leader SMU with 36.

Every Lobo is ranked within the top-40 for the tournament, thanks in part to the team making a comeback and posting the second lowest team round of the day and fourth lowest round of the tournament.

Andre Garica leads the Lobos and is tied for 12th after shooting 1-under for the day and the tournament (72-71-143). Garcia is also the top Lobo performer in the field, Andrej Bevins lurks close behind at T18 at 1-over 145 for the tournament (75-70). Samuel Kim pieced together a mistake free round, and finds himself T29 with fellow Lobo Gustavo Morantes.

Collectively, the team shaved off 13 strokes today, with each member improving from their first day performances. In fact three Lobos in Bevins, Morantes (77-72-149) and Joseph Abella T36 (77-73-150) all cut five strokes in their second rounds.

New Mexico made the biggest jump as a team, moving up three spots while the top three teams remained unchanged. SMU continued it’s consistent play but eventually lost some ground to the field, it’s once six stroke lead has shrunk to four.

The day’s best individual performance belonged to Mississippi’s Braden Thornberry who jumped fifteen spots shooting a 67 for a two day total of 139 and placing himself in lone second. After a quiet, mistake free front nine he caught fire and finished his round with a stretch of 6-under in as many holes.
