The University of New Mexico Men’s Golf team is heading out to Erin Wisconsin, to compete in the third annual Erin Hills Intercollegiate hosted by Marquette University. The field includes 11 teams, eight of which competed in the NCAA tournament last season, and five of the events players are ranked in the Golfweek NCAA top-100 rankings.
Head coach Glen Millican is looking forward to the team’s first trip to the Erin Hill Intercollegiate, and see’s the invite as a “privilege” on the part of Marquette head coach Steve Bailey.
“This will be a great opportunity to play a course hosting a future U.S. Open… and to compete against “a strong field.” Millican said.
Erin Hills is highly regarded as one of the finest public courses in the nation, ranked No. 8 in Golf Digest’s latest list of “America’s 100 Great Public Golf Courses’ and set to host the 2017 U.S. Open. This year’s layout is a par-72 course measuring 7,812 yards.
After the dominating performance by the Lobos at this years Tucker Invitational the confidence is not in short supply, Andrej Bevins was able to establish himself as a leader and the team as a whole was able to piece together consistently strong performances throughout the two days of completion. Millican plans to use the same lineup as the Tucker.
The competition is sure to be tough considering that three of the teams in the field are currently ranked inside the Top 25. In addition, two of the world’s top 20 amateur players in 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur Champion Bryson DeChambeau of SMU and 2015 Open Championship Silver Medalist (awarded to the top amateur) Jordan Niebrugge of Oklahoma State are set to compete.
DeChambeau, who was the medalist at the 2014 Erin Hills Intercollegiate, is the fourth ranked amateur in the world as of Sept. 6, while Neibrugge is ranked 19th according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking system. Both of these players were elected to represent the United States in this year’s Walker Cup.
