Meet Notes vs. Northern Colorado

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team will host the Northern Colorado Bears at Seidler Natatorium this Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. It will be UNM’s final home meet of 2015 as the Lobos won’t host another opponent until New Mexico State comes to Albuquerque on Jan. 30.
UNM swam very well last Saturday against Wyoming and will look to continue that momentum against a Bears team coming off a big dual-meet win over Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 19.
“Last week we had a great meet and great performances from our girls,” UNM head coach Kunio Kono said. “Every single girl stepped up last week. I know they’ll be ready for this weekend.”
The Bears are 2-2 in their meets this season as they also defeated Simon Fraser in Seattle on Oct. 15.
“Northern Colorado is a good team,” Kono said. “On paper, though, I believe we are a better team. The girls just need to do their jobs. Our goals are to swim fast, dive well and give 100 percent. I think we’ll do that this weekend.”
Freestyle sprinter Morgan Ginnis agreed with her coach.
“I think we’re going to do very well Saturday,” the sophomore said. “We had one of our best performances against Wyoming last week, and I think we are ready for this weekend.”
Against Wyoming freshman Mareike Foester swam the second-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke in the Mountain West this season, recording a time of 2:20.17. UNM also owns the second-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke thanks to Kristin Walker’s time of 1:04.46 against Air Force on Oct. 9.
Northern Colorado and UNM both participated in the Denver Relays on Oct. 10, with the Lobos placing third and UNC fourth. UNM had a sizeable advantage, though, finishing with 170 points to the Bears’ 84.
