Orlando, FL. — After the final round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, it’s safe to say that the University of New Mexico Men’s golf team improved from day to day. The third round was one where no Lobo shot higher than 4-over.
Today the Lobos shot an 8-over 296 to move up into a 12th place finish (307-304-296-907). Head coach Glen Millican said that “we (the team) didn’t play great but we did a better job of handling the conditions.”
It was a day of improvement for the Lobos, who seemed to be settled in on the course. The team showcased improved consistency and course management each day, despite continued, troublesome winds.
Joseph Abella finished strong, posting a final round 73 to finish in a tie for 20th at 5-over (74-74-73-221). Millican said that this was a “very solid event for Joe.”
Andre Garcia, Gustavo Morantes and Samuel Kim all finished tied for 53rd with tournament totals of 13-over 229. Andrej Bevins shot his best score of the tournament, a 3-over 75 today, closing out this year’s TCI at 18-over 234 and in 65th place.
Day three provided some serious shuffling atop the leaderboard with 23rd ranked Florida leaping up three spots to finish in a tie for fifth with North Carolina. Arizona State and Vanderbilt each moved up a spot today to finish in 2nd and 4th.
The biggest surprise for the day came at the hands of the University of California who shot 21-over 309 today, costing them this year’s title and a wire-to-wire victory. Arizona State’s Max Rottluff also missed out on his chance for a title after shooting a 2-over 74 on the day, he eventually finished at 4-under 212 for the championship.
Arizona State still provided this year’s champion in Jon Rahm who, after posting a 3-under 69 today moved up two spots on the leaderboard to finish in solo 1st at 6-under and a three day total of 210.
