Orlando, FL. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team showed marginal improvements today and moved up into 13th overall, with a two day total of 611. The scores were nearly identical to those posted yesterday. However, the team shaving three strokes off the final tally today, improving from cumulative total of 307 to 304 today.
Head coach Glen Millican described the day’s conditions and results as “very similar to yesterday.”
“We need to meet the conditions and challenges of this course with a more determined attitude tomorrow” he continued.
The UNM squad continues to be lead by Joseph Abella who has posted consecutive scores of 2-over 74 for a two day total of 148, landing him in a tie for 24th. Abella’s day began with a two bogies in his first four holes, but coming home he was able to limit mistakes and capitalize on a few opportunities, allowing him to finish E through the last 14.
Samuel Kim (78-75-153) and Andre Garcia (78-77-155) were able to show signs of improvement on the day, while Gustavo Morantes (77-78-155) and Andrej Bevins (78-81-159) continued to struggle.
On a day where less than half of the field improved their standing on the leaderboard, the Lobos were one of only three teams to come in with scores lower than the first day totals. With the other teams being Florida (303-289-592) and Augusta University (298-296-594).
“We gave ourselves a lot of room to do that” Millican said, acknowledging the stats merit, showing just how difficult the course is playing.
15th ranked California continues to blister the field remaining atop the leaderboard after day two with a nine stroke advantage. 3rd ranked Illinois was able to move up two spots into solo second and Arizona State held strong in third. North Florida and Vanderbilt posted strong scores to round out the top five.
Collin Morikawa of Cal, with a two day total of 7-under 137 remains in the lead, while Arizona State’s Max Rottluff sits only one stroke behind at 6-under 138.
