ORLANDO FL. — A somber tone follows the first day of play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, where the Lobos finished at +19 and T14 with Washington State. The Lobos were hindered by a tough start, and were never quite able to gain the momentum necessary to make any real move up the leaderboard.
Joseph Abella leads the Lobos after shooting a 2-over 74 placing him in a tie for 30th overall; he displayed the cleanest card on the UNM squad with three bogeys and a lone birdie. Andrej Bevins provided the most excitement, but also had a few serious mistakes.
UNM head coach Glen Millican was less than enthused after today’s team effort describing it simply as “we played bad today.”
“We still have two rounds left giving us time to come back from a bad start” he continued.
California gave back a few shots to the field at the end of the day to finish at 9-under 279. South Carolina is in lone second at 4-under 284, while Arizona State, Illinois and North Carolina round out the top five teams.
The tournament is lead by California’s Collin Marikawa who came in with a 5-under 67. Dylan Meyer and Max Rottluff share second after matching scores of 68.
