ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is heading out to Orlando, Florida, to compete in what is widely regarded as one of the most competitive tournaments of the year, the 12th Annual Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, which is being held this year at Isleworth Golf & Country Club and co-hosted by Texas Tech and the University of Central Florida.
“The TCI is an event we always look forward to. Isleworth is one of the elite facilities in the nation and the guys are excited about playing this weekend” UNM head coach Glen Millican said. “The course is a challenge and the field is a collection of some of the best teams from across the U.S.”
Millican and his squad are looking to back up last year’s performance, which included three Lobos finishing inside the Top 30. The Lobos finished at 7-under 857 after a 1-under 287 in the final round, placing the team in a tie for eighth place with rival UNLV.
Last year’s lowest Lobos were Gavin Green who finished T9 with an 8-under 208, Andrej Bevins who finished T26 at 2-under 214 and Sam Saunders who came in with a 1-under 215 to finish T29.
Four of the top five finishers are back for this year’s tournament, missing only 2014 champion Florida State. Hunter Stewart of Vanderbilt, the 2014 individual champion graduated, while second place finisher Carson Jacobs – also of Vanderbilt – and member of the 2015 All-SEC Second Team is competing this year as a senior.
The fifteen team field includes eleven teams who were ranked in the Top 35 at last season’s conclusion. Six of those teams were NCAA Championship bound, including last year’s NCAA semifinalist Illinois and quarterfinalist Vanderbilt.
This year’s field consists of: Arizona State, Augusta, California , Florida, Illinois , New Mexico, North Carolina, North Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina, Texas Tech, UCF, UNLV, Vanderbilt, Washington State
