ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico Men’s Golf team learned two important lessons last week at the Gopher Invitational, in addition the fact that this isn’t simply a rebuilding year.
First, the Lobos are capable of playing excellent golf as displayed by last week’s rally.
Secondly, the Lobo’s have the talent needed to be great consistently.
Head Coach Glen Millican added that the team has to “take care of what we can control…” and then referring to last year’s seniors “not focus on who we lost.”
Millican informed the media that “we expect to be competitive” especially when playing at the Lobos’ home course. Coach Millican believes that ballstriking will be an obvious advantage throughout this weekend’s tournament.
The Lobos return home this weekend as three-time consecutive champions of the William H. Tucker Invitational. After last week’s eleventh-place finish the team hopes to continue the momentum gained at the Gopher Invitational. Andrej Bevins, a junior, relayed the team’s confidence saying, “we all love this course and we all know where to miss shots.”
This idea was reinforced by Millican who began Wednesday’s media day saying “we always have a chance to play great.” The team should remain confident. Mistakes are going to happen and “it’s going to be a matter of learning how to handle themselves when things aren’t going great,” Millican continued.
“The tougher the conditions are, the better we’re going to play” as put by Bevins. The advantage is undeniable when playing at your home course.
