Midland, TX—The University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad wrapped up its first tournament of the fall season, the Midland Invitational in Midland, TX. Bart Van Leijsen came back and won his consolation final in singles play for the Lobos, defeating Lewis Roskilly of Boise State.
The duo of Hayden Sabatka and Van Leijsen won their quarterfinal and their semifinal doubles matches, but fell short in the final match against Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue of Wichita State 6-3.
“This tournament is an important building block to our fall season, our guys got a lot of matches and learned plenty about their games,” said assistant coach Ben Dunbar. “We have some real areas of improvement that we will build towards for future fall tournaments and we can certainly take some positives away from this tournament too. I think we got better as this tournament went on.”
The Lobos head to Tucson next weekend for the Arizona Invitational September 25-27.
