ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Spring football is about hard work. Pretty much, Lobo football since head coach Bob Davie has been about hard work, and he’s been checking things off the list.

Now coach Davie has established, not just his program, but UNM’s program…one fans alike can be proud of. Tomorrow at Branch Field at University Stadium, it’s the next step…building the start of tradition. UNM will host it’s Spring Showcase tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at University Stadium, and the fan friendly event which is free should get fans more than excited for the 2015 season.
The event will feature free parking in the Stadium West lot, with entry from the NW Corner (Gate 4) of the Stadium. There will be inflatables for kids to play on, and The Sports Bar with Michael Carlyle and Mike Trujillo will broadcast from the stadium throughout the practice. Fans can get their grub on at the Showcase as well, with $2 hot dogs, $1 small sodas and $1 ice cream sandwiches.
The first 100 fans through the gate will get a 2014 Highlight DVD, and after the Showcase, fans can head onto the field for autographs (UNM will have 2015 schedule posters available) and photos with their favorite players.
“We made a lot of strides this spring,” coach Davie told his team after the final morning practice on Thursday. “Now, we have to go and win games. I want to win games.”
While winning is the object in 2015, winning was the object at the end of practice, as Director of Athletic Performance Ben Hilgart handed out the coveted 2015 Hard Hat Awards. In all, 42 players were honored with a Lobo Hard Hat (an actual hard hat with Lobo striping and logos to mimic the regular helmet).
The programs, in its fourth year, was created by Hilgart and staff to reward players who “best display a daily commitment to our identity of Out Work, Out Hit, Out Discipline”. Team members earned points for strength training, speed development and conditioning, and they are graded on a variety of factors.
Toye Adewon, Darien Allen, David Anaya, Austin Apodaca, Mike Arrendona, Daquan Baker, Ricky Bennett, Wendell Carter, Chris Edling, Dameon Gamblin, Cole Gautsche, Sam Gentry, David Georges, Teriyon Gipson, Reno Henderson, Garrett Hughes, Cranston Jones, Lamar Jordan, Romell Jordan, Jajuan Lawson, Marcus Lopez, Eden Mahina, Tyrone Owens, Matt Quarells, Patrick Reed, Zack Rogers, Steve Romero, Dillon Romine, Dom Twitty, William Udeh, Michael Wilkinson and Diquon Woodhouse all picked up customized hard hats.
The top 10 point scorers earned both a hard hat and customized hard hat camo lifting shirt, and in reverse order, the winners were Reece White, Jake Rothschiller, Bryan Oldenkamp, Geoff Smelser, Daryl Chestnut, Michael Walsh, Johnny Vizcaino, Taylor Timmons and Marquis Bundy.
The 2015 Champion, who also received a trophy, was Garrett Adcock. Adcock had finished third in 2013 and second in 2014.
Prior to the Hard Hat Awards, Coach Davie had a special presentation of his own, but not to a team member. With UNM holding open practices, the Lobos have had quite a number of visitors at practice. However, only one, superfan Larry Wilson, made every one of them. He showed up in a variety of jerseys, from Lynn Swan, to Randy White, to Jamal Charles, to Russell Wilson.
With that in mind, Coach Davie brought Larry in front of the team and presented him with his very own jersey, personalized with “WILSON” and the number 1. The presentation is the subject of our LoboTV video for the day.
