In Orlando, Fla., the 11th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team got to play against the best team in all the land on Monday and finished just one stroke behind.

The Lobos shot a 2-over 290 during the second round of the Tavistock College Invitational, posting a two-day total of 6-under 570 and a seventh-place finish in an event that features 12 of the nation’s Top 50 teams as rated by Golfweek.com/Sagarin.

One of UNM’s playing partners for the round as No. 1 Illinois, which shot a 1-over 289 on the Lake Nona Golf Course. Fourteen teams, however, are chasing 15th-ranked Vanderbilt, which shot a 9-under 279 on Monday and is sitting at 26-under 550 (271-279) for the tournament.

“We got to play with the No. 1 team in the country, and they got us by a stroke,” UNM coach Glen Millican said. “Playing in a field like this is going to be a great experience for us as we get through the year. Not only is it going to help us down the road, but we still have a chance to finish the tournament strong if we put together a good final round.”

No. 4 Florida State is second at 24-under 552 (270-282), followed by No. 7 and tournament co-host Texas Tech at 22-under 554 (267-287). The Illini are fourth at 11-under 565 (276-289), No. 45 North Florida is fifth at 10-under 566 (278-288) and No. 19 California is sixth at 7-under 569 (283-286).

Senior Gavin Green continues to pace the Lobos individually. His 1-under 71 on Monday left him at 6-under 138 and a tie for seventh place.

Sophomore Andrej Bevins battled back from 2 over to finish at even-par 72 in the second round and a tie for 14th overall at 4-under.

“Both had good rounds,” Millican said. “Gavin wasn’t quite as sharp as he was yesterday, but he was still solid. Andrej got into a bit of trouble on (holes) 8 and 9 but recovered nicely.”

Senior Sam Saunders also shot an even-par 72 and is at 1-over 145 (73-72) for the event and tied for 34th place. Senior Victor Perez struggled to and 8-over 80 for a two-day total of 8-over 152 (72-80), but Junior Nelson da Silva Ramos had a 3-over 75 that kept UNM’s team score down. Only da Silva Ramos’ double bogey on No. 18 dampened an otherwise solid round. Perez is tied for 65th place while da Silva Ramos is tied for 71st.
