In Bremerton, Washington, one day after the University of New Mexico men’s golf team delivered a promising second round at the Husky Invitational, the Gold Mountain Golf Club fought back on Tuesday.
The Lobos fired an 8-over 296 for a three-day total of 14-over 878 to finish in sixth place of the Husky Invitational. UNM finished 11 strokes behind co-champions Oregon and UCLA.
“Overall it was a decent week, not a great week,” Lobo coach Glen Millican said. “We did OK, even with Victor (Perez) struggling.”
Oregon, which was just one of two teams in the field of 15 under par on Tuesday with a 1-under 287. The Ducks shot a 3-over 867 for the 54-hole event. The Bruins shot a 3-over 291 to slip into a tie with their Pac-12 brethren.
The Lobos’ trio of senior veterans – Perez, Gavin Green and Sam Saunders each struggled during Tuesday’s final round. Green, who was in contention for the individual title heading into the final round, shot a 4-over 76 for a 54-hole score of 1-under 215 (72-67-76) and a tied for third place.
He finished six strokes behind medalist Jake Knapp of UCLA. Knapp finished at 7-under 209 (71-67-71).
Saunders also came home with a 7-over 76 on Tuesday and tied for 26th place at 6-over 222 (77-69-76). Perez shot a 6-over 78 for a three-day total 227 (76-73-78). He finished in a tie for 45th place.
Senior Nelson da Silva Ramos fired a 1-under 71 Tuesday to help keep UNM’s score in check, He was 9 over par for the event (79-75-71=225). Sophomore Andrej Bevins completed Tuesday’s final round with a 1-over 73 for a 54-hole 221 (74-74-73). He tied for 17th.
Redshirt freshman Andre Garcia tied for eighth among 41 individual competitors on another course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club, finishing at 3-over 216. Junior Joe Abella tied for 19th at 8-over 221 and sophomore Mitch Johnson was 26th 11-over 224.
The Lobos don’t have much time to dwell on their performance in Washington. They return home for the 60th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course on Friday and Saturday.
UNM is the two-time defending champion, while Green looks to become the first player in the history of the event to win the Tucker three times.
