ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Just in time for the fall season, interim head coach Bart Scott has announced the signing of Augustus Ge who will join the Lobos for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

Ge is a four-star recruit from Phoenix, Ariz. who is well known across the southwest for his success on the tennis courts. The six-foot-one incoming freshman earned a 4.2 grade point average during high school and comes to UNM with vast experience from competing in the USTA Southwest section as well as all over the country.

However, Ge’s journey to UNM was not the traditional recruitment story. Scott and former head coach Alan Dils attempted to recruit Ge last fall and had him travel to UNM for a school visit to experience what the Lobo community had to offer. But, Ge’s decision came down to UNM and Louisville and Ge eventually signed a National Letter of Intent with the Cardinals.

After a short stint at Louisville, Ge had a change of heart and realized that he wanted to be a part of the Lobo tennis community. Just two weeks into classes, Ge and his family reached out to Coach Scott and assistant coach Ben Dunbar about any possible opportunities with the team. After Scott and Dunbar both thoroughly reviewed the situation, they felt that Ge would make a great addition to the Lobo lineup. Ge officially joined the team on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

“Augustus is a stand out guy,” Scott said. “He’s an amazing student, amazing athlete, and has the respect of a lot of people out here. We’re sad that things didn’t work out at Louisville, but we know Augustus will have an immediate impact on our program and our community.”

Ge expressed that he knows becoming a Lobo was the right decision and definitely sees UNM as a much better fit.

“I’m so excited to be here at UNM,” Ge said. “It’s an amazing community to be apart of, the coaches have always been good to me, and there’s a great team atmosphere.”

With Ge on the lineup, the Lobos now have five of the best players from the Southwest section and six of the best in the region.

“It may be an interesting way to pick up a player, but we are all so excited to have him. I know that he is one-hundred percent committed to being a Lobo,” Scott said.

Ge is eligible to compete in the upcoming fall and spring seasons.
