TitleAssociate Head Coach/Receivers

Lujan joined the Lobo Family in January 2026, coming to UNM from Northwestern, where he spent two seasons as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach. He worked with Jason Eck at South Dakota State.

Previous Coaching Stops

Northwestern (2024-25): Lujan spent two seasons with Northwestern as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach.

In 2025, the Wildcats went 7-6 and defeated Central Michigan 34-7 in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. The Wildcat offense totaled 4,499 yards on the season and finished in the top half of the Big Ten in rushing yards with 2,082. Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone completed 60.0% of his passes and threw for 17 touchdowns. All those totals were marked improvements over 2024.

That season saw the Wildcat offense riddled with injuries, using four quarterbacks, yet still picking up key wins in league play over Maryland and Purdue.

South Dakota State (2017-23): Lujan spent his first seven seasons as a collegiate coach at his alma mater, rising from an offensive quality control coach to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022 and 2023, culminating in the back-to-back FCS national titles.

He became the offensive coordinator, while retaining his quarterbacks coach position, in 2022 after Jason Eck left SDSU to become the head coach at Idaho. In 2022, the Jackrabbits rolled to a 14-1 record and a perfect 8-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference mark, only losing in the opener to Iowa.

Offense was the calling card in 2022 as SDSU scored at least 31 points in each of the final eight games, five coming against nationally-ranked teams and three of those in the top-10. Quarterback Mark Gronowski started every game, throwing for 2,967 yards and 26 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Isaiah Davis rushed for 1,451 yards, and tight end Tucker Kraft was drafted by Green Bay after the season, after beating North Dakota State 45-21 for the FCS title.

It was more of the same in 2023, this time going 15-0 to run SDSU’s winning streak to 29 straight. Only two games finished within double digits as SDSU scored 30 points 11 times, four points five times, 50 points twice, and 70 once. Gronowski again was masterful under Lujan, throwing for 3,058 yards and 29 touchdowns as the ’Jacks averaged 449.9 yards of offense and 37.3 points per game.

Before becoming the offensive coordinator, Lujan spent 2019-21 as quarterbacks coach, 2018 as a running backs coach

, and 2017 (his first season) as an offensive quality control coach.

In 2021, Lujan mentored graduate transfer Chris Oladokun, who seamlessly took over the starting role after an injury to Gronowski, and earned honorable mention all-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) recognition. Oladokun threw for 3,164 passing yards and 25 touchdowns while posting a completion percentage of 62.3% (238-of-384) to help lead the Jackrabbits to an 11-4 record and an FCS Semifinals berth. Following the season, Oladokun was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During the 2020 season, played in the spring of 2021, Lujan oversaw the development of Gronowski, who was a true freshman. He started all 10 games under center and totaled 2,142 yards of offense and 23 total touchdowns (15 passing, 7 rushing, 1 receiving) as he helped lead the Jackrabbits to the FCS national title game for the first time in program history. Gronowski was named Phil Steele FCS Freshman of the Year, as well as the MVFC Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year following the season.

In Lujan's first season as quarterbacks coach in 2019, South Dakota State featured three quarterbacks who started multiple games, finishing the season with an 8-5 record and a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs. The Jackrabbits ranked second among MVFC teams with a 154.4 passing efficiency rating and fourth among league teams, averaging 195.7 passing yards per game while throwing for 21 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

In his lone season coaching running backs, SDSU rushed for 230.1 yards per game, at the time the best in the program’s FCS history. Back Pierre Strong, Jr broke the 1,000-yard mark and was the MVFC Freshman of the Year.

PLAYING CAREER – SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (2014-16), CHABOT COLLEGE (2012-13): Went 10-5 as the starter for South Dakota State, serving as a team captain in 2015 and 2016. He was named to the 2014 MVFC All-Newcomer Team and finished his career with 3,877 career passing yards and 29 touchdowns. At Chabot, he was the 2013 Golden Gate Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
