Nick Joos, a veteran collegiate administrator, joined the Lobo Family in August of 2026, and he served as Deputy AD/Chief External Relations Officer. He most recently served as Senior Associate Athletic Director at Iowa State.
With New Mexico, he will oversee all external units, including marketing, communications, creative services, ticketing, and UNM Sports Properties. He will also oversee many of the department's branding and licensing initiatives, serve as a spokesman for the department, as well as the sport administrator for the Lobo football program.
Joos brings a Hall of Fame resume and 40 years of collegiate experience, including upper-level administrative roles at three Power 4 institutions over 26 years.
His credentials are extensive, including serving as president of the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in 2008-09. In his tenure, Joos led the organization into a hybrid relationship with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named the winner of the Arch Ward Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in athletics communications.
Just this past summer, he earned the CSC President’s Award for his continued service to the organization as Chair of the Past President’s Cabinet and on its Academic All-America committee.
Joos has spent the past five years at his alma mater, Iowa State, where he oversaw and implemented strategies for external communications, social media, and branding, including strategic initiatives for a wide range of issues.
He created a collaborative working group to enhance the Cyclone football game-day experience, has overseen the ideation, creation, and installation of athletics facility branding projects, and worked alongside the University’s Trademark and Licensing staff to implement strategies that resulted in record royalty collections of over $2M in FY24 and $3M in both FY25 and FY26.
He also led Iowa State’s season-long 50th-anniversary celebration of Hilton Coliseum, Jack Trice Stadium, and the Cyclone Women’s Basketball program, and served on the campus-wide Jack Trice 100 Centennial Committee.
From 2017-21, he worked at Missouri, where he started as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications before being promoted to Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Communications Officer after a year. With Missouri, he oversaw strategic communications, creative services, broadcast operations, and technology teams, while serving as the sport administrator for Mizzou’s football, men’s golf, and women’s gymnastics programs.
Before Missouri, Joos worked at Baylor for 14 years, from 2003-17, serving in various roles. He started as the primary football contact and was instrumental in the promotional efforts for Robert Griffin III’s 2011 Heisman Trophy run. Joos was eventually named Executive Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs, overseeing not only communications but also marketing, spirit and tradition, ticket operations, BaylorVision, and licensing. He also was the liaison to the Bears’ multimedia rights holder, Baylor Bear Sports Properties. He served as sport administrator for BU’s men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s golf programs during his time in Waco.
Joos has also worked at UMass for three years and at Nebraska for 13 years, starting in the sports information offices before moving into men’s basketball operations.
A graduate of Iowa State and a West Des Moines, Iowa, native, Nick and his wife of 35 years, Jill, are the parents of two grown children, Christopher and Jenna.
