Matt Martin joined the Lobo family in March 2026 and serves as a special teams analyst. He came to UNM after four seasons at Hutchinson Community College and brings over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience.
Martin works under special teams coordinator Erik Link on all coaching matters involving the specialists, with an emphasis on UNM’s long snappers and special teams design.
At Hutchinson, Martin spent four years as receivers coach, and while there, he added co-special teams coordinator duties in 2024 and assistant head coach duties in 2023. With the Blue Dragons, he coached a dozen All-Jayhawk Conference players as Hutchinson went a combined 43-4 in his four years with the program, making three national title games and winning the 2024 national title. Hutchinson product Receiver Malik Benson was drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Martin spent eight seasons, from 2014-2021, with Southeast Missouri State, where he served as Special Teams Coordinator and, at various times, as Running Backs coach, Receivers coach, and Outside Linebackers coach.
Martin produced numerous Ohio Valley Conference all-league players and FCS All-Americans. In 2018, Martin was named the OVC Assistant Coach of the Year.
During his eight-year tenure, he coached seven players who went on to the NFL or other professional football leagues.
Martin spent two stints at his alma mater, Emporia State. The second stint was four years, from 2010-13, following a graduate assistant role with the Hornets in 2006 and 2007. In his four seasons on the full-time staff, he coached four All-MIAA players, and five advanced to either the NFL or the CFL.
He coached on the defensive side of the ball at Nebraska-Kearney over two seasons, during which the Lopers posted an 11-win season and qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
A well-versed coach, Martin has been a guest speaker at several special teams clinics, including LSU, Oklahoma, and the AFCA Convention. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State in 2006 and 2008.
Martin and his wife, Jenna, have two daughters, Quinn and Wells.
