Dan Carrel joined The University of New Mexico football staff in 2019, and enters his first season as linebackers coach at UNM. Prior to the Duke City, Carrel was the linebackers coach at the University of Houston.
Carrel’s second season at Houston saw senior outside linebacker Emeke Egbule lead all linebackers in The American with seven passes defended – five pass breakups and two interceptions. Egbule also ranked second in the league and fifth nationally with three fumble recoveries on the year, one returned for a touchdown against ECU. He also coached Khalil Williams to second-team honors from The American.
Carrel was part of a defensive staff helped Houston to a ranking of second in The American in rushing defense (147.9 yards per game), scoring defense (23.8 points per game), pass efficiency defense (121.5) and red zone defense (77.1 percent). Houston also ranked 13th nationally in total defense and fourth in rushing defense in 2016. The team finished second in The American in sacks, scoring defense and total defense while leading the league in rushing defense.
Carrel also spent the 2014 season as a defensive graduate assistant at Kentucky and the 2013 season as an offensive graduate assistant at Ohio State, assisting the Buckeyes’ offensive line. In his lone season in Columbus, Ohio State played in the Big Ten Championship and the 2014 Orange Bowl.
Carrel was a two-year letterman at West Liberty who also spent the 2012 season at his alma mater as a defensive graduate assistant after starting his career as a strength and conditioning intern at South Carolina. Dan and his wife Danielle have a newborn, Rocco.
