Freshman Ingrid Gutierrez likely will see a lot of tournament play in New Mexico’s spring season of 2015. The talented freshman showed her abilities in five fall tournaments posting eight rounds (18-hole cards) of 76 or lower.
Gutierrez’s top round was a 74 registered at the Golfweek Conference Challenge — an event held for league champions from the 2014 season. Gutierrez also showed the ability to improve her scoring and in four of the five events she turned in her best card on the final 18 holes. Her final-round average was a solid 75. Her first-round average was 77.80.
Her best round of the fall season came at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire where she went 76-76-75=227.
The fall experience should help Gutierrez in qualifying for the UNM roster for the spring events. Coach Jill Trujillo takes a six-player roster into the spring of 2015 and five Lobos will form the official lineup for each tournament. A sixth Lobo may play as an individual.
Gutierrez has plenty of experience in junior golf in Mexico which helped her quickly face the challenges of D-I golf.
“Ingrid is one of the top junior golfers in Mexico,” said Trujillo. “We got her under the radar. She has one of the best short games I’ve ever seen. I never worry about her making a par because she has that good of a short game.
“She is a happy person and fun to watch play. She will be an essential part of our program for years to come.”
Gutierrez says her hobbies off the course are playing the piano, singing and yoga. Her favorite golfer is Adam Scott and one of her top food choices is enchiladas suizas. Her parents are Humberto Gutierrez and Astrid Nunez. She was born on March 15, 1996.
