LAWRENCE, Kan. – The New Mexico women’s golf team concluded play Tuesday the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational with the final round at Lawrence Country Club. The Lobos shot 25-over during the final 18 holes to climb up to a ninth place finish at 74-over.
Host Kansas won the event at 6-over, posting a 23-shot win over runner-up Delaware at 29-over. Cal was third at 31-over, followed by UC Davis (45-over) in fourth and Longwood (58-over) in fifth.
On a day when only two players in the field shot under par, Ava Cepeda shot even par to move up to T-14th at 12-over. It is her third straight top-15 finish to open the season. Chelsea Truong and Julia Gelma each finished T-39th at 19-over, while Ausanee Udkamtiang finished at 25-over. Ciara Rushmer rounded out the lineup with a 31-over total.
“All the scores were really high today for the field,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “That made Ava’s even par round today very impressive.”
The Lobos return to action Oct. 18-19 when they travel to Texas for the Jim West Challenge, their final event of the fall season.
