ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico won all 14 swimming races, posting five PRs as it easily beat UTRGV 184-110 in UNM’s first win of the season. UTRGV drops to 0-1 on the year.
Ruby Sallah and Sophia Corder each had two PRs, and rookie Elsa Reel added a fifth as UNM dominated from start to finish. The 74-point margin was the largest for UNM against a Division I opponent since an 88-point win (194-106) over New Mexico State on January 25, 2020.
Eight Lobos won the first eight individual swimming races, with no winner repeating. After winning the opening 400-medley relay, Jadyn Bruch and Eryn Quirsfeld finished 1-2 in the 1000-free. Liv O’Mahony, who won twice last week against North Texas, won the 200-free, followed by Summer Wenger and Molly Wardrop. Those three races gave UNM a massive 42-12 lead, and UNM was never threatened after that.
Next were the 50-back and 50-breast, with Rian Bleyendaal and Myra Cansler finishing 1-2, and Elsa Reel winning the 50-breast, with Sallah finishing third with a PR. Sophia Corder then PR’d to win the 200 fly, and Arianna Stokes turned in her usual win in the 50-free, with Liv Hann close behind.
After the 1-meter diving break, UTRGV's Hann won the 100 free before Cansler won the 200 back, ending a run of wins for eight different Lobos. Reel took a second win in the 200 breast, followed by Mollie Gorman, with Sallah posting another PR.
Summer Wenger added a win, leading a 1-2-3 sweep with Quirsfeld and Bruch in the 500 free; Corder then added a second win in the 50 fly.
In the final two races, UNM exhibitioned its team, but Reel, O’Mahony, and Corder finished 1-2-3 for no points; then UNM finished first and second in the final 200-free relay.
The Lobos now take a few weeks off from the pool before competing in the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston November 17-20.
