SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s golf team concluded play at the NB3 Matchplay on Wednesday during a windy day at the Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Lobos used a late rally to finish the event with a 2.5-2.5 tie with New Mexico State.
The Lobos opened the day with the conclusion of their match with NC State, a 3-2 loss. Ava Cepeda and Ciara Rushmer recorded victories for UNM against the Wolfpack.
In the final match against New Mexico State, the Lobos trailed in four of the five matches on the back nine before rallying for the tie. Cepeda earned her second win of the event, leading wire-to-wire for a 2&1 victory. The first comeback came from Ausanee Udkamtiang, who was 2-down with three holes left before winning No. 16 and No. 18 to halve her match. Chelsea Truong was 1-down with four holes left before winning three straight holes to take a 2&1 victory.
“Chelsea making those three birdies in a row was pretty tough,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “The last one she made, on 17, she walked it in and it was pretty fun to see. That comeback gives everyone a little boost of confidence for the rest of the semester. I think we did so many good things this week, but we didn’t win our matches because of putting. Too many three-putts and missing short putts, but that is something we will work on before our next event.”
The Lobos will return to action next week with the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, hosted by Kansas.
