SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded play at the NB3 Matchplay on Wednesday during a windy at the Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Lobos wrapped up the event with a 3.5-1.5 win over Houston as they finished third at the event.
The Lobos opened the day by concluding their match against NC State, a 3-2 loss. Johnnie Clark and Wyatt Provence recorded wins for UNM against the Wolfpack.
In the final match of the event, the Lobos earned a 3.5-1.5 victory over Houston. Clark, Provence and Oliver Scriven recorded wins, while Thayer Plewe halved his match to earn a half point. It completed a perfect 3-0 record on the week for Provence, while Clark posted his second win of the event.
“It is always good to finish with a win,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “It would have been nice to have gotten that fourth point instead of finishing with 3.5, but that match showed the fight the guys have in them. We need to clean some things up, but I am proud of them. For Oliver to go out first, set the tone and win 5&3 was huge. We knew we need to win all five to have a shot at the title and that win gave us a shot. Unfortunately we came up short, but match play is a different beast. It exploits the emotional side of the game and we need to figure out how to use that to our advantage.”
New Mexico will conclude its fall schedule Oct. 19-20 with The Clerico in Tulsa, Okla.
