SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play at the NB3 Matchplay on Tuesday during a rainy day at the Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Lobos opened the day by playing Oklahoma, before matchup with NC State in the afternoon.
In the opening match, the Lobos suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 24 Oklahoma. Ausanee Udkamtiang earned UNM’s point, posting a 1-up victory over Audrey Rischer.
The afternoon match was stopped due to darkness with 5-6 holes remaining in each match. NC State leads in three matches, while Lobos lead in one as Ava Cepeda is 2-up through 13 holes in her match. Ciara Rushmer is tied in her match with six holes to play. The UNM-NCSU match will conclude on Wednesday morning when play resumes.
“When the weather doesn’t cooperate, one of the main things to focus on is two putts,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We had a lot of three putts today and lost some holes because of it. We’re playing strong in the second match, so we’ll see how it ends up tomorrow.”
The New Mexico-NC State match will resume at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The Lobos’ final match of the event, against New Mexico State will start around 11:00 a.m. That match will be featured during live coverage on Golf Channel from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
