SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team began play at the NB3 Matchplay on Tuesday during a rainy day at the Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Lobos opened the day by playing New Mexico State, before a matchup with NC State in the afternoon.
In the opening match, the Lobos suffered a 3.5-1.5 loss to the Aggies. Wyatt Provence recorded a 4&2 win over Frank Cabeza to secure a point for UNM, while Thayer Plewe halved his match with Mateo Payan.
The afternoon match was stopped due to darkness with 5-6 holes remaining in each match. NC State and New Mexico each lead in two matches, with the other one tied. Johnnie Clark is 4-up with five holes to play of his match, while Provence is 3-up with five to play as he looks for his second win of the event. Plewe is tied in his match with six holes to play.
“Today was a tough day on the golf course with wet conditions and battling the elements all day,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We got behind early in 3 of the 5 matches and just ran out of holes at the end. I am excited to see how the guys battle back tomorrow as anything can happen in a round robin match play format.”
The New Mexico-NC State match will resume at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The Lobos’ final match of the event, against Houston will start around 11:00 a.m. That match will be featured during live coverage on Golf Channel from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
