SHIZUOKA, Japan – The New Mexico men’s golf team continued play on Thursday in Japan with the second round of the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League. The Lobos shot the low round of the day at Grand Fields Country Club at 14-under and moved up the leaderboard to second place at 22-under overall in a field that features universities from five different countries.
Nihon University from Japan continues to lead the event at 24-under, but the Lobos closed to within two shots at 22-under heading into the final round. TCU is third at 18-under, Tohoku Fukushi of Japan is fourth at 13-under, while Seattle Univ. rounds out the top five at 5-over.
Johnnie Clark and Clark Sonnenberg led UNM on Thursday, each shooting a 4-under round of 67. Thayer Plewe and Wyatt Provence each shot a 3-under second round of 68. Dylan Park rounded out the lineup with a 76. Plewe continues to be the top Lobo on the individual leaderboard at 7-under for the tournament, while Clark is 6-under through two rounds.
“Today’s round was a battle of staying patient and giving yourself looks at birdie,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We started off the round going 6-under in the first four holes and then we cooled off until late into the back nine. We made the turn at 6-under going into the tougher back nine, but stayed patient until a 3-hole stretch (15-17) where everyone caught fire and we played those holes at 12-under par. It was a great lesson for the team that sometimes you just have to keep your chin up and believe that at any moment great things can happen if you stay patient and build momentum. We put ourselves into a great position for tomorrow and look forward to building on today’s solid round.”
The tournament, which is in its third season, features collegiate teams from Japan, Scotland, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. It concludes Friday at Grand Fields Country Club.
