ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team began play Friday at the 71st William H. Tucker Invitational as they hosted one of the nation’s oldest golf tournaments at the UNM Championship course. As rain halted play late in the second round, the Lobos are T-2nd at 12-under, two shots off the lead.
With about six holes left to play in the second round, San Diego State leads at 14-under, two shots ahead of the Lobos and Santa Clara, each at 12-under. BYU and Colorado are tied for fourth at 11-under. The Lobos held the first round lead at 13-under.
Two Lobos are in the top five at the end of day one. Johnnie Clark, looking for his third straight win to start the season, is in third place at 8-under, three shots back. Thayer Plewe is T-4th at 7-under, as both he and Clark shot 5-under in the first round. Oliver Scriven is at even par, Wyatt Provence is at 3-over and Clark Sonnenberg is at 7-over. Among the four Lobos playing as individuals, Cade Freeze is the top performer at 1-under.
“We started out with great weather and team battled, especially in the first round,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We got off a little slow and were playing the tough holes first, but we exploded with four to five holes left and had a big push to take the lead. In the second round, the wind came up and we slowed down a little bit before the rain came. The good thing is we have that stretch wetook advantage of in round one coming up in the round two to start tomorrow. I’m happy we are only a couple shots back and I think we are in great position.”
The tournament will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday with the conclusion of the second round, followed by the final round at the UNM Championship Course. Admission is free.
