TULSA, Okla. & USAFA, Colo. --- Dario Ciobotaru and David Schwarc showed out well at the ITA All-American Championships, with Ciobotaru advancing to the Round of 64 and Schwarc to the Round of 128 as UNM's squad split between the ITA All-American Championships and the Bedford Cup, which Air Force hosted.
Ciobotaru took down Penn's Luka Butera in the opening round before knocking out Arizona's Matthias Uwe Kask. Ciobotaru defeated Butera 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 and then won a second three-setter, winning 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 over Kask. Schwarc also won his opener, beating Princeton's Milan Marovits handily 6-4, 6-0.
Schwarc's run ended in the Round of 128 with a loss to Imran Daniel Abdul Harrar of Texas Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Ciobotaru lost in the Round of 64 to No. 21 seed Jelani Sarr of Arizona State, falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
The outing was the first of the fall season for both Ciobotaru and Schwarc.
At the Bedford Cup, UNM picked up three singles wins, with Nikhil Srivasta, Juan Rodriguez, and Connor Dils picking up wins. Srivasta defeated Montana's Joseph Townes 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1; Dils defeated Gareth Igesund of Montana State 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2); and Rodriguez defeated Sebastian Mazur of host Air Force 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
In doubles, Srivasta and Rodriguez went 2-1, winning over Montana's Darrshan Suresh Muma and Townes 7-5, and Daniel Tonkal and Mazur of Air Force 6-1.
The Lobos return this week for the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Pasadena, with Philip Bosin, Alberto Perez, Max Relic, and Schwarc playing. Bosin, Perez, and Relic are making their season debuts.
