LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play Tuesday at the Red Raider Invitational with the first two rounds at the Rawls Golf Course on the campus of Texas Tech. The Lobos shot 19-over during the opening 36 holes to be in fourth place as play enters the final round.
The Lobos shot 4-over in the first round to hold a share of the lead after the morning, but shot 15-over in the second round to finish the day at 19-over. Host Texas Tech holds the 36-hole lead at 3-over, while BYU is in second at 7-over. Abilene Christian (14-over), the Lobos and Sam Houston (21-over) round out the top five.
Ava Cepeda led UNM on Tuesday, shooting a first-round 70 before a second-round 73 to end the day T-4th on the individual leaderboard at 1-under. Ausanee Udkamtiang is at 6-over, Rebecca Galasso and Chelsea Truong are each at 7-over, while Ciara Rushmer rounded out the lineup at 8-over through 36 holes.
“We hung in there during the first round, but we didn’t handle ourselves well in the second 18,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We started and finished the second round terrible. Ava had a nice comeback in the second round, getting back to 1-over after being 4-over through seven holes.
The tournament will conclude Wednesday with the final round at the Rawls Golf Course.
