MUSKOKA LAKES, Ont. – The New Mexico men’s golf team captured the team title and Johnnie Clark won the individual title as play concluded Tuesday at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational at Oviinbyrd Golf Club. It was the second straight victory to start the season for Clark and the second straight top-2 finish for the Lobos.
New Mexico posted a 10-shot victory, its largest in 11 years since a 19-shot win at the 2015 William H. Tucker Invitational. The Lobos finished at 5-under and were the only team to finish under par as Notre Dame finished as runner-up at 5-over. Santa Clara (12-over), Mississippi State (19-over), Rutgers (25-over) and Missouri (25-over) rounded out the top six.
Clark shot rounds of 68-67-72 to finish at 6-under and post a one-shot victory for his third collegiate win. It was his second straight win, having won earlier this month at the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League in Japan, becoming the first Lobo to win consecutive events since 2002-03 when Michael Letzig won the title at the Mountain West Championship and NCAA West Regional.
Wyatt Provence finished T-4th at 3-under and Thayer Plewe was T-9th at 2-over as three Lobos finished in the top 10 individually. Clark Sonnenberg finished at 13-over and Oliver Scriven rounded out the lineup at 18-over.
“It is always special to win, but even more when you win wire-to-wire,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Over all three rounds we played solid and everyone stepped up at different times this week. We counted at least one score from all five guys this week. We have been on the road a long time, between Japan and Canada, so it will be nice to get home. These first two tournaments validate how good this team can be.”
The Lobos return home Sept. 25-26 to host the William H. Tucker Invitational.
