LAS CRUCES, N.M.— The Lobos led for over 80 minutes following a goal by Celina Frenz in the 10th minute, but a late goal by New Mexico State with 14 seconds left resulted in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.
UNM outshot NMSU 15-8 including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal, but a foul committed with 89:46 on the clock led to a penalty kick that the Aggies converted on.
After Presley Devey took the first shot on goal in the 4th minute that was saved, Frenz put the Lobos in the lead 9:42 into the match on UNM’s second shot, striking it into the top left of the goal for her second goal of the season.
NMSU’s first shot was blocked with Alyson Campbell making three saves in the 14th, 18th and 26th minutes, while UNM took a total of nine shots with five on goal and Nicole Anderson leading with three shots and two on goal.
Like the first half, Devey took the first shot of the second half, shooting it wide right. Following an Aggie shot in the 50th minute, the next shot didn’t come until Claire Roybal’s shot went high in the 70th minute and Anderson’s shot in the 74th minute was saved.
The Lobos kept attacking with Kennedy Brown taking a shot in the 78th minute that went high and Fiona Jenkins taking a shot in the 79th minute that was saved. Roybal’s second shot of the half went wide right with Campbell tasked with making her first save of the half in the 85th minute.
A foul with 89:46 on the clock resulted in a penalty kick being awarded and the Aggies tying the match for the final score.
With the result, the Lobos stand at 3-2-1 heading into a four-match home stretch, starting with Utah Tech on Thursday, Sept. 17.
