ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— A Fiona Jenkins goal off of a Savanah Sanchez assist in the 60th minute of Sunday’s contest with Gonzaga tied the match at one, but two goals by the Bulldogs resulted in a 3-1 final.
For Jenkins, it was the second goal of her career and the first since 2024, with the assist the third of Sanchez’s career.
Following scoreless first half in which GU had a 10-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 edge in shots on goal and Mia Barela having the best look for UNM in the 38th minute on a shot outside of the 18-yard box that forced the GU keeper to make a leaping reach with her left hand to deflect the ball over the net, GU opened the scoring in the 50th minute on a shot to the low right post.
The Lobos had a chance to respond on a shot by Nicole Anderson that went wide left in the 51st minute and again on a header by Gabby Beaudry to the top right of the net that was millimeters from crossing the line and was saved in the 57th minute before finding the equalizer in the 60th minute.
A throw in by Allie Anderson set up the opportunity, with the Lobo finding Sanchez along the right side. Taking on a Bulldog defender, Sanchez turned right and just before nearing the endline, crossed it into the box with the ball bouncing and finding Jenkins in stride, who buried it bottom right.
Presley Devey’s header in the 67th minute was blocked by a GU defender with the tie holding until the 70th minute when a foul on Alyson Campbell in the box off of a corner kick resulted in a penalty kick and GU goal.
A diving save by Campbell in the 74th minute kept it a one-goal match before a turnover near midfield resulted in a transition goal for the Bulldogs in the 81st minute.
Campbell finished with six saves against GU with one team save in the 13th minute as Devey led the team with four shots.
