ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Veteran college administrator Nick Joos, most recently Senior Associate Athletic Director at Iowa State, has been named Deputy Athletic Director/Chief External Affairs Officer by Ryan Berryman, Vice President/Director of Athletics. Joos will officially begin his duties on Monday, August 24.
"I am ecstatic to add such an experienced and accomplished administrator like Nick Joos to our staff," said Berryman. "Nick's experience as a senior-level administrator leading external areas, paired with his sport administration experience with national championship-winning coaches, makes him the ideal fit for this role. I can't wait to work with – and learn from him."
With New Mexico, he will oversee all external units, including marketing, communications, creative services, ticketing, and UNM Sports Properties. He will also oversee many of the department's branding and licensing initiatives, serve as a spokesman for the department, as well as the sport administrator for the Lobo football program.
“Jill and I are thrilled for the next adventure in our lives in Albuquerque,” Joos said. “I am incredibly honored to join the Lobo Family and collaborate with Ryan Berryman and the outstanding team he has assembled to help elevate the athletics program.
“New Mexico Athletics enjoys tremendous momentum, academically and athletically, and I’m excited to use my experiences to help support our coaches and staff while serving our student-athletes and passionate Lobo fans,” he added. “Ryan’s leadership and his alignment with campus and state leaders have positioned New Mexico for continued success.”
Joos brings with him a Hall of Fame resume and 40 years of collegiate experience, including upper-level administrative experience at three Power 4 institutions over 26 years.
His credentials are extensive, including serving as president of the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in 2008-09. In his tenure, Joos led the organization into a hybrid relationship with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named the winner of the Arch Ward Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in athletics communications.
Just this past summer, he earned the CSC President’s Award for his continued service to the organization as Chair of the Past President’s Cabinet, and on its Academic All-America committee.
Joos has spent the past five years at his alma mater, Iowa State, where he oversaw and implemented strategies for external communications, social media, and branding, including strategic initiatives for a wide range of issues.
He created a collaborative working group to enhance the Cyclone football game-day experience, has overseen the ideation, creation, and installation of athletics facility branding projects, and worked alongside the University’s Trademark and Licensing staff to implement strategies that resulted in record royalty collections of over $2M in FY24 and $3M in both FY25 and FY26.
He also led Iowa State’s season-long 50th-anniversary celebration of Hilton Coliseum, Jack Trice Stadium, and the Cyclone Women’s Basketball program, and served on the campus-wide Jack Trice 100 Centennial Committee.
