COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — One year after breaking a Mountain West record with 231 Scholar-Athletes, the Lobos picked up 227 Scholar-Athletes, tying for the second-most in league history. Overall, the Lobos led the Mountain West for a fourth consecutive season, and for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
To earn Mountain West Scholar-Athlete status, student-athletes needed a 3.5 GPA for the year.
New Mexico’s 227 easily outpaced the Mountain West, as only Utah State broke 200 with 205. UNM and USU are the only two schools in league history to have 200 honored in a single year.
Football set a program record with 43 honorees, and women’s tennis set a program record with 10 honorees (the entire team). Along with football and women’s tennis, women’s track and field had 30, baseball had 25, softball had 19, soccer had 17, swimming and diving had 15, volleyball and women’s cross country each had 13, men’s track and field had 10, men’s golf had eight, men’s tennis and men’s golf had six, and men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s cross country each had four.
