INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The NCAA has released APR scores for all Division I universities, and as usual, The University of New Mexico passed with flying colors. UNM had a department-wide APR score of 993, with all programs easily passing the 930 minimum. The Lobos had four programs, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s basketball, and women’s soccer, with perfect four-year rates.
The overall APR score of 993 was a departmental record, topping the 989 recorded in 2015-16.
UNM has now had 12 perfect 4-year scores over the last three reports, and, overall, nine of UNM’s 16 programs have had perfect single-year APR scores, giving UNM 31 over the last three reports.
Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for each student-athlete's eligibility and retention in each academic term.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team’s APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
Teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.
Of the 16 sports for UNM (Indoor and outdoor track and field are combined for APR purposes), all 16 easily passed the 930-threshold with 14 of the 16 scoring a 984 or better for the rolling four-year average. For just the 2024-25 single-year APR, nine sports (men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s golf, soccer, swimming & diving, women’s tennis, and volleyball) all had perfect 1000s.
“Our student-athletes and coaching staff have a championship mindset whether on the field or in the classroom,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Ryan Berryman. “Our core mission centers around academic success, which these numbers showcase. Chris Hudson and our academic team do a tremendous job working with our student-athletes and coaches.”
