TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began play Sunday at the 2026 Mountain West Championship with the first round at OMNI Tucson National. The Lobos shot 6-under during the tournament’s first round to be in seventh place after day one.
San Diego State holds the lead at 15-under, two shots ahead of Wyoming at 13-under. San Jose State (11-under), Grand Canyon (10-under) and UNLV (9-under) round out the top five.
Freshman Thayer Plewe led UNM during the opening round with a 4-under 68. He is T-7th on the individual leaderboard after his debut round at the Mountain West Championship. Wyatt Provence and Emil Albers each shot a 1-under 71, while Johnnie Clark shot an even par 72. Clark Sonnenberg rounded out the lineup with a round of 73.
The Mountain West Championship continues Monday and concludes Tuesday.
