ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Since she was announced as The University of New Mexico head women’s basketball coach, Amy Eagan has gotten to work completing a staff and building a roster.

With the staff coming together, Eagan and her coaching staff signed their first player in guard Valerie Norwood, who spent the previous season at Lindenwood. From Wellington, Kansas, Norwood played in all 33 games her freshman season, averaging 4.5 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and 1.1 assists per game in 17.8 minutes per game.

She scored in double figures in three games, twice with 12 points for a season high, and had five or more rebounds in four games with a season high of seven.

A graduate of Wellington High School, Norwood was named Miss Kansas Basketball and named a top-5 girls’ all-state basketball player. She broke the school record for career assists (289) and steals (235) and was selected to the 4A KSHSAA First Team in consecutive years. Her senior season, the guard was named the 4A Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year. During her high school career, she averaged 16 points per game, five assists, four steals and five rebounds per game.
