ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico struck first and last in its nonconference matchup with Texas Tech but couldn’t come all the way back from a pair of three-spots in the eighth and ninth as the Lobos fell 10-5 Tuesday afternoon at Lobo Baseball Field.
The Lobos opened the scoring with three runs on five hits and a pair of errors in the opening two frames before the Red Raiders responded with four in the fourth and fifth frames to take the lead. RHP Ty Cunningham and RHP Talor Grubbs both tossed scoreless innings to calm things down, but TTU plated six more off LHP Cooper Corkrean and RHP Luke Wiseman in the final two frames to go up 10-3 going into the bottom of the ninth.
UNM matched the Red Raiders with nine hits, with Anthony Diaz (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 BB) leading the way with a pair of singles – Antonio Gianni and Shane Miller both doubled in the bottom of the ninth to lead six other Lobos with a knock apiece.
In a bullpen day for New Mexico,10 different arms toed the bump – RHP Ethin Woltz (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K) opened with two scoreless frames, with RHP Josh Barnhouse (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R / 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) tagged for the loss to drop to 1-3 on the year.
